NAME: Miu Hinasaki
AGE: 17
CANON: Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Black Water
CANON HISTORY: http://bcl.rpen.us/zerowiki/index.php?title=Miu_Hinasaki
CANON PERSONALITY: Miu comes across as being distant and maybe even arrogant, always looking down on people. This isn’t far from the truth, really-- she does distance herself from people, seeing the world in shades of herself vs. everyone else. With the ability to read minds, Miu from a very young age has been able to know a person’s real thoughts and feelings, which has made her grow up jaded. She often finds herself disgusted with the way humanity lies and hides behind fakeness and more lies on top of it all just to get through the day.
This doesn’t mean Miu is honest entirely herself. She’s blunt and less inclined to pretty up her truthbombs than most, but she still omits truths and doesn’t readily volunteer information about herself; she describes herself as being “empty,” and that because of that she can become anything--she doesn’t care much about herself, so she just does whatever she’s told without much feeling or emotion behind what it is she’s doing. She despises people and their ‘ugliness’ they hide and trusts no one but herself. She simply doesn’t care and doesn’t feel particularly moved by most things. She’s an aspiring actress who does work as a gravure model and has been making strides landing small roles and has a lot of promise. This is because slipping in and out of roles and wearing masks, faking emotions and, ironically since it’s what she hates, lying is what she’s best at.
Despite that, there are some exceptions to what motivates and moves her. She’s driven mostly by the feelings of abandonment and confusion that stems from her mother abandoning her, since Miu doesn’t know or understand why she was left behind. This is what starts her drive to seek her mother out, hoping for answers. It’s through this journey that she meets Yuri, someone much like herself and who she feels she can actually connect with, and begins to feel a little alive again. She learns to care for Yuri and tentatively reaches out to the other girl. She’s abrasive at first, rather haughtily telling Yuri that her powers far exceed Yuri’s and explaining she’s had these abilities all her life. She’s shown to be determined and driven when she sets her mind to something, such as when Yuri goes missing and Miu throws off Ren’s worries. Ren repeatedly attempts to warn and stop Miu, with Miu simply bulldozing over the worries by casually continuing to speak, saying hat she’s taking the camera and going up on the mountain. She’s also not above striking low-- when Ren grabs her in an attempt to physically stop her, Miu catches a glimpse of one of Ren’s darkest memories and callously asks him, “Did you kill that girl?” to throw him off balance before she again states she’s going up on the mountain and leaves.
Because of her abilities, Miu also doesn’t have much of a sense of fear. She does still get scared of things popping out at her, of course, but she’s been seeing the broken, twisted spirits of the dead since she was tiny, so it hardly fazes her anymore. Her biggest fear is being alone-- That is, that the reason her mother abandoned her was because she was unwanted and she’s afraid of always being unwanted and alone.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Extremely strong spiritual powers, which comes with the ability to see and speak with spirits. She also has a special ability that, when using the camera obscura, allows her to temporarily slow time for a few seconds.
Able to see a person’s thoughts, emotions, and delves into their memories with a touch. She’s almost constantly aware of someone’s true feelings, thought she tends to just let it wash over her without really digging further.
Kagemi: Shadow Reading. The ability to see the secrets of objects when handling them, and involves following the "shadows" of the past, of missing things or spirited away people. For example if someone was missing a ring, having the ring box means Miu could track down and locate the ring. Having just a photo of a missing person enables Miu to track that person down. Typically she can manage to track them far enough, but if they really don't want to be found then the trail might go cold eventually or get 'fuzzy,' leaving her unable to find the person. To quote one of the memos about it: The traces will attract malevolent ghosts, so it is dangerous to spend too long gazing at them. Yet another risk lies in following the trace of a person who has already died or has been spirited away, as you may be inadvertently following them into the world of the dead.
Mitori: Glancing (mitori) in Fatal Frame V is the ability to touch a spirit at the moment of defeat and witness a vision of its last moments. This sort of ties into the above of seeing a person’s thoughts and emotions and such.
It should also be noted that Miu is what’s called a ‘shadowborn.’ “Shadowborn (夜泉子, yomiko) is a term first mentioned in Fatal Frame V, referring to children born between a living woman and a dead man. Children born from this union are said to be half dead from birth and have extraordinarily strong sixth senses, making them feared - and sometimes revered - by those around them. Giving birth to one apparently drastically reduces the lifespan of the mother. How the child is conceived is currently unknown; however, it appears that it involves a strong emotional attachment to, and longing for, a deceased loved one.”

AU NAME: Miu Hinasaki
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: She’s slightly taller, but not much more than that.
AU HISTORY: -- Much like her canon self, she’s adopted! However, she was adopted by another family at birth, so she’s never known her birth family.
--Grew up happy and well-loved, with little desire to meet her birth mother. She grew up with a couple of siblings, a mother, and a father, in a rather supportive household in the city.
--Honestly her life was rather straight-forward and uneventful. She was healthy and whole and grew up deciding to help people, especially orphans or those given up to adoption like she was. Seeing her own success story and hearing about less-than-successful ones made her determined to help others reach a happy ending too, so Miu’s focused on social work.
--She wants to work with adoption agencies and foster care, so when she got accepted into college that’s what her major is in, social work.
--Was involved in a lot of volunteer work through high school.
--Currently set to attend university in the fall, majoring in social work. She’s moved into an apartment, currently by herself, in Birch Hills, to gain some more independence from her family, but is still close enough to help out her siblings or parents if need be.
- She's lived in Recolle her whole life! She's never known anything different and didn't have a desire to travel far from home, preferring to remain close.
- Volunteer work usually revolves around donating items, or buying things in bulk around holidays to donate, do secret santa type gifts, etc., or helping out youth programs at the local library. She also tutors in the middle school and elementary schools in various subjects (usually English or social studies). It gives her a sense of actually doing something and making a difference.
- She's been friends with Izuku Midoriya since they were young and has become close to Yukiko during high school (with players' permissions!)
- While she has no desire to really find her birth mother, she's a different race from her adopted parents and (at least) some of her siblings (to keep that open should anyone want to app in as a sibling of her's) and has been feeling more and more like trying to reconnect with her roots and who she is. So lately she's been getting more into researching and looking into traditional Japanese culture and the like.
- While volunteer work has been great, she's realized she needs to broaden her horizons a little more for the potential job market, so she's been looking into other extracurricular activities to get involved in with college. Namely, the theater seems like it could be fun to dabble into...
- While she doesn't like to lie, similar to her original self she's quite good at this. This is namely because she's been able to practice it-- she's a good girl and has no interest in trouble, but she's the type to frequently cover for rebellious siblings and provide alibis and covers for friends/siblings in trouble so they won't get into trouble with adults. She wants to either help them herself or for them to learn from their mistakes on their own. (But she also works on a strike system where if they don't get themselves together before three strikes, she'll go to an adult/more authoritative figure than herself next time they're in serious trouble).
AU PERSONALITY: For the most part, Miu is still independent and tries to do stuff on her own without bothering others. Miu also is still determined and driven when her mind is set on a specific goal, not letting anything get in her way for long; once her nails are dug into something, she sticks with it. She’s also still a little more on the blunt side and tends to say what’s on her mind, not softening the blows, but that’s where the similarities end. Without the ability to read minds and emotions, Miu hasn’t become the jaded, bitter youth she was in her original universe. In fact, she’s quite the opposite, believing in the better part of humanity and believing that people will choose to do good over bad if they have the choice. She’s more trusting of others and forms friendships easier, because she doesn’t have the ability to see their true motives, or doubt, or be suspicious of someone’s interest in her.
Since Miu as able to grow up in a supportive family and make connections both with friends and family, Miu isn’t closed off and distant from people; in fact, she enjoys being around people, going out with friends, and enjoying a ‘typical’ teenager lifestyle. She’s not inclined to go make trouble or anything like that, but she’s learned to care for others easier. She’s taken on a Big Sister type of role towards her friends and is the kind to be disapproving of a friend’s bad life choices while still helping them to cover up in the hopes they’re learn from the experience themselves.
Really it all comes down to not having the ability to read minds anymore. Since that ability is what created such a bitter person to begin with, doing away with it means she’s managed to grow up rather, well, normally. Her family loves her and she doesn’t know any different, has no reason to be suspicious of everyone she meets or read their ulterior motives, making her more trusting and open to actually forming friendships and connections to people. Because she’s not so terribly isolated and lonely all the time, she’s learned to open up to many people and can feel content and optimistic about her life and her future. Seeing all the good adoption has done for her family, it helped shape her growing up to be someone more giving and helpful, wanting to do her best to assure others have the happy ending she’s gotten. Miu’s a lot quicker to jump in to help people and cares easier for them than her original self.
